Why BBP is so CRUCIAL:

At AAM, we are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in the micropigmentation industry. Ensuring the health and safety of both artists and clients is our top priority. Proper Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) and sanitation practices are critical for creating a sterile and professional studio environment. Here’s why it matters and some essential tips to follow:

Importance of Proper BBP and Sanitation Practices:

  1. Client Safety: Ensuring a clean and sanitized workspace minimizes the risk of infections and complications for clients.

  2. Professional Integrity: Adhering to industry-standard hygiene practices enhances your professional reputation and builds trust with clients.

  3. Legal Compliance: Compliance with BBP and sanitation regulations is not just ethical but also a legal requirement in many regions.

Top Contagious BBPs in the Micropigmentation Industry:

  1. Hepatitis B and C: Highly contagious and can lead to severe liver diseases. Can survive on surfaces for up to 7 days.

  2. HIV/AIDS: Affects the immune system and can have life-threatening consequences. Can survive on surfaces for a few hours to several days.

  3. Staph Infections: Staphylococcus bacteria can cause skin infections and, if left untreated, may lead to more severe issues. Can survive on surfaces for days to weeks.

Tips for Maintaining a Sterile Studio Environment:

  1. Use Single-Use Items: Discard needles, pigments, and other disposable items after each client. We’ve seen an uptick in the trend to use furry/blanket style coverings behind clients heads, this is not approved by the AAM. That is a huge risk for contamination and is not proper BBP protocol.

  2. Autoclave Equipment: Sterilize reusable tools and equipment using an autoclave regularly.

  3. Hand Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly and use hand sanitizers between clients. Always wear disposable gloves and don’t touch your phone or any other surface with contaminated gloves.

  4. Surface Disinfection: Regularly clean and disinfect all surfaces in the studio. BBPs can survive on surfaces, so thorough cleaning is crucial.

  5. Proper Waste Disposal: Dispose of biohazardous waste according to local regulations.

  6. Educate Clients: Inform clients about the importance of aftercare to minimize infection risks.

  7. Documentation of Illnesses: Maintain proper documentation of all illnesses to track and prevent the spread of infections.

Remember, a commitment to proper BBP and sanitation practices not only safeguards the well-being of everyone involved but also elevates the standards of the micropigmentation industry as a whole. Let’s create a safe and thriving community! 💪✨
