AAM Board Exams

The objective of this AAM Exam is to raise the bar on how each practitioner operates their practice.

The AAM Exam has been developed to assure the examinee has integrated and retained vital information to practice permanent makeup, safely, for both themselves and their clients/patients.






The AAM Board Exam:


Prior to taking your exam we need the following items:

  1. Become a AAM Associate Member (annual membership $250) (Unless your state requires the board exam)
  2. Training certificate with required number of hours 
  3. Photo ID
  4. Bloodborne Pathogens certificate (If out of NJ, Maine, Massachusetts or Nevada)
  5. Apprenticeship letter (If required by the state you will be working in)​
  6. Insurance
  7. Payment of 250.00
  8. Client files the day of the test
    5 eyebrows, 5 eyeliner, 5 lip or 2 eyebrow, 2 eyeliner, 2 lip (If out of NJ, Maine, Massachusetts or Nevada)

The Certified Micropigmentation Instructor Exam:

Below are the steps that need to be taken before becoming a CMI:​
  1. Provide a permanent cosmetic training certificate along with photo ID.
  2. Become a AAM Associate Member (annual membership $250)
  3. Take AAM Board Exam (Exam $250)
    • Become a AAM Associate Member (annual membership $250) (Unless your state requires the board exam)
    • Training certificate with required number of hours 
    • Photo ID
    • Bloodborne Pathogens certificate (If out of NJ, Maine, Massachusetts or Nevada)
    • Apprenticeship letter (If required by the state you will be working in​)
    • Insurance
    • Payment of 250.00
    • Client files the day of the test
      5 eyebrows, 5 eyeliner, 5 lip or 2 eyebrow, 2 eyeliner, 2 lip (If out of NJ, Maine, Massachusetts or Nevada)
  4. Must be practicing for at least 5 yrs.
  5. Offer a primary/ fundamentals training course that is 6 days, 100 hours with hands on/ live models.
  6. Provide training materials such as Manual, Handouts, Curriculum, Client forms for approval by the AAM Board

  8.  Upgrade to CMI Membership (annual membership $350) upon passing the CMI Exam.
